I will be seeing my (original) pdoc in a week. As you all know, I'm eager to get off of zyprexa. My pdoc told me a year ago, last time we were experimenting with meds before resigning ourselves to zyprexa, that he would be willing to prescribe me any drug on this list:

-Latuda
-Geodon
-Saphris
-Invega
-Fanapt

I've since tried Geodon and Latuda; they caused severe nausea, so they are out. I'm looking for a medication that will not cause weight gain, sedation, or nausea, that is effective against both mood symptoms (especially depression) and psychosis. If the medication can be taken without food, that would be great too. It isn't crucial though.

I've also tried Abilify in the past; it also made me nauseous, but not as bad as Geodon and Latuda.

Do any of you take any of the drugs on my list of candidates? How does the med work for you? What side effects have you had? Can you think of any meds (on the list or not) that would fulfill the wishes I expressed in this post?

Thanks so much for your help!

You might find this useful...

Antipsychotics Factsheet - Rethink

^ There is a table with the side effect profile of the different APs on p5.

I tried Amisulpride last time, which is meant to be one of the least sedating but it ended up being very much so for me... I think it was more the schizophrenia than the medication though. I was smoking & using drugs at the time... so I don't think it wasn't working properly. Other than that it was just muscle spasms & akathisia that were an issue.

I've tried Saphris, it did wonders for my psychosis. I'm not sure how it would work for the mood aspect of things. I wasn't able to stay on it because it gave me the worst akathisia I've ever had in my life. But, that is rare for the newer anti-psychotics so it probably won't happen to you. I didn't gain any weight on it.

Invega seemed to help at first but I didn't take it long. I thought it might cause mood swings or manic episodes, read some bad reviews online too. I didn't like the long list of side effects and I got freaked out. My psychiatrist just handed me like six sample bottles of invega but I didn't last two weeks. It made me feel weird. I would take it and get extreme elation like I was suddenly slap happy, then as it wore off I was getting sad and I would start crying. Basically felt it was bringing my symptoms back.

So now I do not take medication. I've also tried Abilify and feel it's no longer needed as I'm about as level as can be.

My daughter has been taking saphris for about 1.5 yes now. It has worked wonderfully for her. She has had a tiny bit of weight gain.. but can't be sure its the saphris. She's not crazy about the way you have to take it (under the tongue etc) but she loves the stability it gives her. Lamictal as an adjunct has beenfabulous for mood stability .

What jumped to mind for me is Stelazine, because it's an anti-nausea drug as well as an anti-psychotic. It doesn't cause weight gain or much sedation either, but it's not as affective for depression or mood stabilization. Possibly you could take it in conjunction with a mood stabilizer like Lamictal, or even a low dose of one of the more anti-depressant atypicals like Abilify. It would prevent the nausea you felt before.

Stelazine is a really old drug and I think doctors overlook it sometimes.
