Is it normal to stay on medication for life after a psychotic break or do most people come off them eventually?

It depends on a lot of things but medicine for life is what a lot of us resign to.

Well it does depend on a lot of things. I had a psychotic break and I haven't been the same. But I am bp 1 and PTSD. I was just not medicated properly. I think u should ask a pdoc. But for me with the bp and PTSD on top of the psychotic break I probably need them for life, unfortunately.

My psychiatrist would like to have me on meds for life but I insist on tapering off - one is entitled to tapering off after 2 years after 1st occurrence here in our country. If it then happens again, one is to take meds for 5 years, if it happens for 3rd time, you're on meds for life. If you take'em.
Will Hall and Rufus May seem okay without meds!

I hear it's better if you have just 'psychosis' (maybe after illegal drugs) rather than 'schizophrenia', but there has been research by Wunderink and someone else that reducing or coming off meds can be longterm helpful even for people with 'schizophrenia'!

I'm also greatly inspired by Open Dialogue Finland approach with low/no meds, watch the documentary about them!

Also the Soteria approach, or Parachute in NY..

It is likely that you can be on meds for life - but new ones are always being introduced with varying effectiveness. Worrying about it is just going to put additional anxiety on you. Every case is different.

I've had no incidents in the past year or so and lead a relatively normal and happy life I'm not on medication.i attribute some of it to my bf who completely grounds me if I say something like I'm a goddess hell bring it down to a humility that I understand, and because I have a Spitutual approach and read alot I have a context for understanding that it's just an attempt to merge a divine beauty/or attributes of the goddess into yourself not a madness or delusion.
This sort of ability to put things into a spirtual context stops things from getting out of hand and helps understand what's going on so there's no confusion,

It is normal for the majority to stay on them however some do come off especially if your psychosis was drug induced and you stopped soon enough or if it's caused by some event like a family member dying....
