Today I was out shopping and I went into a shop, and from the moment I went in, It absolutely stank of rotten eggs. The smell was so bad, that I was trying to stop myself from gagging. I tried to move to the opposite end of the shop to make it go away, but it was just as bad. There were several people in the shop, and they seemed perfectly content, and it seemed like they couldn't smell it. I had to leave the shop very quickly, as I felt like I was going to throw up or choke.
Could this have been a smell hallucination?
I wouldn't have thought so, however the smell was extremely bad, and nobody else seemed bothered by it.

Yea it's common for them to be bad smelling things....I would often get cigarette smoke or boiled cabbage smell.

a couple years ago the voices kept saying that they were making me smell the scent of rotting corpses and kept making me think i liked it by yelling it in my head. since the voices have been quiet the smells have gone.

How long did it last, and did anyone else smell it? There is a certain seizure type that can have sensory hallucinations - and one person doesn't usually have more than one or two of them. It can include hallucinatory smells, tastes, sounds, and visual information. As a rule, the smells and tastes are indescribibly bad, and no one around you will experience the hallucination. And if you smelled it and walked out, it would go with you. These types of seizures are typically very short - lasting anywhere from 10 seconds or so, up to two minutes, and there is no loss of awareness.

I have smelled nasty scents in the grocery store, too...fecal matter, which obviously wasn't real but I sure could smell it. I just told myself it was just in my head as none of the other shoppers seemed to notice it.

I've also smelled cigarette smoke in the checkout line at the grocery store...like a cigarette is burning but nothing is there.

For me, the symptoms happen when I am very stressed out and if I am having trouble sleeping.

Take care.
