I'm sorry that article was upsetting. I read it all, but I had to do it a few times and it still didn't sit right all the way. I think it could have been constructed in a better way. It made it seem like the studies were trying to link violence with schizophrenia. I'm not sure if that's what they were going for, but that's how it came off. In the end they referenced the need to distinguish that most people that are suffering from a mental illness are non-violent, but that the news generally doesn't report cases of suicide and self harm over cases of violence.

Yes, that's what upset me, the whole "prone to commit violence". That just isn't true. Violence is not part of the illness, as far as I can tell. :/ Thanks, Door.

Actually there is a higher violence rate with sz but it's all directly linked to a higher rate of substance abuse. From what I can recall there is also a higher rate of violence associated with being male but we never hear about that one despite the fact that it's higher than the change for sz. It's not like the news talks about locking up all the males or anything they way they sometimes do for sz.

Violence is not part of the disease itself. Aggression is a character trait, not necessarily an element of the disease.

I'm just sick of the stigma. My own mother is afraid of me and I've never done a thing to harm her. I give up. I don't care what goes on anymore. I have no part in it anyway.

My episode made me think of myself as the scum of the earth. My solution was to kill them with kindness, until I cracked, called the police and went to affirmative action. No violence, just what any person that felt persecuted would do.

I've been dragged out of my house in handcuffs on two occasions, does that make me violent? I don't believe I was but I wonder would I add to a statistic simply by how I dealt with.

No I wasn't booked for a crime, just sent to the nearest station and then to a psych ward. I always thought something like that could be fun when I was younger but when you're being dragged out of your home with your neighbours and their kids looking on it's a very real experience. Horrible stuff.

I can imagine. I thought it was bad enough being walked out the first time by a bunch of police. They didn't cuff me though. Geez, that must have been so awful. I'm sorry, chickenfoot.

Made me feel like a criminal but I understand why they had to do it, they had no choice, I tried to run and then boom I was on the floor with 4 cops cuffing me. I wouldn't have minded really it's jus that my fiancee was present and all the kids outside playing on the street seen it. Horrible memory that I never want to relive. I don't regret it though, these experiences have made me who I am today. Scars have the power to remind us that the past was real.

this happened to me, too. my T called the cops on me and they handcuffed me and shackled my ankles. all my neighbors were out there staring at me. i felt so low

That is awful. Was this more than a mental health call or is this the policy in the US?

The police once escorted me to the hospital. The officer who dealt with me was a lady which made it a lot easier. She did a really good job at keeping me calm by treating me like a person, not a criminal. I was never handcuffed or restrained in any way.

it was solely mental health. my T called the police because i was suicidal and acutely psychotic. im not sure about other areas in regards to what the police procedure is, but yeah, it was horrible. even though my T saved my life by doing that it still affected me the way i was treated. but keep in mind i live in a backcountry small rural southern town. it might be different in other areas
