I admit I wouldn't ever have one of those myself, but that little shell/helmet is awfully cute.

I agree. But sadly, I read lots of them are painted with bad paint that poisons them. So I bought some natural ones for them to move into when they're ready.

I need to change their bedding. For some reason, one spot on the side is starting to mold.

I put a fresh strawberry by their food and you can see someone's been on it. It had dirt all over it and little holes in it.

OMG. I woke up and mine has its little pincher missing and 2 legs just laying around his shell. I've been crying since I woke up because I feel like it's my fault. Their little pincher is how they get food and water and now I feel like a terrible person and I can't even keep a crab alive. I can't look at them without freaking out and crying more. My bf is at work. So I have to wait for him to get home in like 6 hours so he can pick up the legs for me because they freak me out so badly.

I feel so horrible. My voices keep telling me it's my fault and I can't stop crying. I didn't mean to do anything to hurt or anything. I tried to do everything it says like keeping it humid, making sure they have a sea sponge for water and food and extra shells to move into to. Lots of space to bury themselves. I've been reading since I got them and now they won't stop telling me it's my fault.

Myth #3. If my crab's big claw falls off, he will die. This is a common myth. The crab uses its big purple (or brown) claw as a trap-door to its shell home, and without it is more vulnerable to predators. However in captivity, it has no predators to be concerned with (except its cage-mates). Thus, there is no real reason why a crab who loses its large claw should die. I have had at least five hermit crabs lose large claws and regenerate them. I have also had some crabs lose BOTH claws and still manage to feed themselves and thus stimulate themselves to molt and regenerate the missing claws. Continue to give your claw-less crab optimum care -- he will grow a new "limb bud" and a new claw before you know it! The same applies to the crab's legs -- a missing leg or antennae will be regenerated!
I can't see the picture you posted, but I understand that you got hermit crabs, here's some info that might help.
Thanks for this!

I googled everything for hours and hours. He never moved. He is completely limp. Apparently you can smell it if they die. My boyfriend picked him up after work and smelled him for half of a second and was like "oh yeah. He's dead." He didn't react to any stimulation. I spent the next hours crying non stop. So he asked if I wanted to give him a funeral. But I didn't even have a chance to name him yet. So I named him starry because he had stars on his shell. I put him in a little box and set him in a stream to the pond and watched him float down until I couldn't see the box from where I was anymore.
I don't remember the rest of last night after that.

I'm sorry for the deceased one. Starry, I hope his soul will find a place to settle somewhere, that's what they do after all, isn't it? What I see is that the nature's battle had to happen, it wasn't your fault, you keep giving them love and care and your research will pay off. Never had one for myself, this human hermit appreciate your thread.

<3 I had to get diamond a new friend. I named him titanium. They seem to get alone well. This morning diamond was buried and titanium was sleeping on top of him. Lol. I put a little box so they can hide and not have to bury themselves to do so. I looked earlier and they knocked it over in a way where it's just titled and the little bowl was moved right next to the sponge. It's like they made a little house right next to food and water. Someone was playing in salt water last night. there was lots of coconut husk in it.

Love the naming scheme of your buddies there. They are making themselves comfortable, lovely to hear that. I hope you're not scared of them any more.

You mentioned coconut husk and that reminded me of this biggest hermit crab known to man which can weight up to nine pounds! They are sometimes referred to as robber crab or palm thief. Interesting.

I got hermit crabs. But I'm scared of them.

The only time I've ever been near a hermit crab, was when picking shells up off beaches & finding one occupied with a crab.

Always a bit of a shock when the shell comes alive!

They do look sort of fun though.

It's a corn chip. The regular shell one (titanium) went to town on it. Diamond stayed sitting on top of the sticks.

I'm sorry, Sweetie. Little critters like that die easily. There is no way to know if he was sick when you got him or how old he was. what's important is you loved him and gave him a good home. It's not your fault he died
