Hello. About 5 years ago I had a really bad episode of psychosis induced by smoking lots of marijuana. At the height of the psychotic episode I was attending classes (before smoking on that day) and when the teachers would speak I would find it impossible to understand anything that was being said to me, aside from short simple directions (like sit down, turn to page x). I couldn't form any sort of memory of what was being expressed. (I also had other symptoms of psychosis but I'm only mentioning the one that's persisting)
Since quitting marijuana after that psychosis I've had a remaining issue with understanding conversations spoken to me. More specifically, phrases will often take me a few extra seconds to have any understanding of what is being said or sometimes I'll miss it completely. I find it makes my life 100% harder because to others it's barely noticeable, but I am struggling constantly to perform a function that used to, and should, come naturally. On top of that, certain words or phrases will make me nervous because when I hear them I'm afraid of the way I will interpret them - for instance the word duty (among many others). It's not that I don't remember what individual words mean at the time, my brain just finds difficulty processing them all together. When these words make me nervous I'm even more-so unable to interpret sentences being delivered to me, so the two problems often snowball. I'm interested if anyone has had similar experiences, but really interested in whether anyone can either pinpoint the problem (brain damage possibly?) or has recovered from the aforementioned problem via some method or treatment - even theories about what part of the brain may be affected are welcome. I've tried therapy and anti-psychotics as well as some treatments for ADD and Anxiety, all to no avail. Thanks for reading/replies. |
