Dear Sir/Madam,
My son is 20 years old and three years ago he started to show signs of schizophrenia. The illness at him is manifesting with closing him up in himself. On the beginning he was losing his apetit, he is not present in the conversation while he is some company, losing interest for everything, depression and similar. The first couple of months he was moving all the time when he was sitting on a chair, but with persistence of my family we succeed to convice him to lose that habit. All the time he is superstitious and he thinks that someone is making some kind of “bad magic”. I must mention that in this three years in different periods his condition was changing. Sometimes I was thinking that my son was cured, and sometimes I thinked that there is no cure for him. Frequently he is in crisis, especially when he is alone, when he is not accepted in a company and in a lot of other situations, the depression is very frequent. Terapy On the beginning he started to take pils “Respiridon” or “Riset” from 1 mlg, and a stage by stage, the doctor- psychiatrist was increasing the dose, so now he is taking 5 mlg on a day, and he is taking 3 mlg on the morning and 2 mlg on a night, and plus 3 mlg of “Mendelex”. This couple of last days he is taking a new medicine: “OLANZAPIN” and he now is not taking “Respiridon” and “Mendelex”, but only this “OLANZAPIN”. Additional Terapy As a additional terapy for some period he was taking “aquasource” (or so called: seaweed) and from this he was feeling better. Now as a additional terapy he is taking “PABA” (Para aminobentoic acid : 500 mlg), and this was recomendet from a doctor- psychiatrist, and he said that it is really good for this kind of situations, but said to say my son doesn’t fill any effect from it. In some periods he was taking also “zink”, and also a lot of teas and similar medicines. Please can you tell me your opinion about the regular and the additional terapy, is there any alternative and what is it? What is your opinion about the medicine “PABA”, does it have any use for this kind of diagnose? Will it be any kind of use if my son is going on classes for “JOGA”, and what kind of it, with a goal that it will have a positive influence on his condition? Thank you in advance. |

Hello Badi1234: It's probably important for you to know that this place operates primarily as peer support. In other words, the people who take part in these discussions are people who have personal experience with psychosis and/or schizophrenia. To the best of my knowledge, none of them are professionals. That doesn't mean that no one can offer you helpful information, but it is important for you to know that we're not doctors. That said... Medical science has not yet determined exactly what causes schizophrenia although it is known that many things can cause psychosis. For this reason, there isn't one perfect treatment for everyone. What can be helpful is to familiarize yourself with the variety of treatments available and then try the ones that fit your personal situation. For example, psychosis can sometimes be caused by recreational (street) drug use. Obviously, the most helpful thing to do in that case would be to stop using drugs. As another example, there is a strong link between trauma and psychosis. If that's your son's situation then it might be helpful for him to seek therapy with a trauma specialist. There are many, many things that can help someone with schizophrenia or psychosis to improve, even recover completely but what those things are will vary depending on the individual. As a general rule, rest, a stress free environment, good nutrition, exercise, and love and acceptance from family and friends -- all of these will be helpful in some manner. Other options that can be helpful include... [*] Talk therapy: Specific forms of talk therapy have been identified as very helpful for some individuals. This includes cognitive behavior therapy, depth psychology, transpersonal therapy and open dialogue treatment. [*] Medication: Some people identify medication as very helpful for them. Others find medication to not help them at all. [*] Insight & Meaning: Some people find it very helpful to find meaning in their experience of psychosis. Other people prefer to put the experience behind them. [*] Spiritual Practice: Some individuals may find it helpful to explore spirituality or take up a spiritual practice in the aftermath of their experience. Those are just some general ideas. Perhaps you could share that list with your son to see if some ideas appeal to him more than others. You may also find it helpful to read this post with your son: Schizophrenia & Hope Best of luck to you and your son.
