we have been under exteme stress in the past couple months .. at first i was ok with it .. still am ok with it .. hoever .. i am having strange things going on inside my head .... mostly when i am alone ... but mostly when i try to sleep .. i hear deep chattering of inside ppl talking to each other .. like hearing conversations but not able to tune in on what they are saying ..sometime i do hear and all i can do is listen ... other times it sounds like a mall .. only one time in the past few days i heard a strong male voice in my ear .. only said one word and it only lasted a second and was gone. i dont know what the one word was - i think it was my name but not sure. i dont know what is going on .. i have deep depression held back ... and begining not to feel anything.. numb most the time.
on the outside - every day life is fine and able to get through the day..
i say nothing to no one about what is happening because they would think i was crazy. we have no medical insurance to go to a doctor.. what should i do ..any ideas what this could be or what could be happening to me?

I'm sorry you are having such a stressful life right now. Extreme stress can do all sorts of strange things to the body, including hearing/seeing things.

The best thing you can do for yourself now, is to be kind to yourself -- mind, body and soul. Sleep is one of the most important factors. Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night in a *dark* room. Not having total darkness when sleeping can cause restless sleep and tiredness the next day. If the room isn't dark, I would recommend a sleeping mask.

Physical activity is also a great stress reducer. Especially a mind-body exercising like Tai Chi or Yoga. Perhaps there is a class in your area that you could find? At least try to get outside and take a walk every day. Not walking to somewhere, but just walking and enjoying the trees, the wind, the flowers...spending some time with nature.

For your mind, I would consider doing some artwork or journaling. Just the act of putting words on paper or drawing can be great for letting those emotions out. Otherwise thoughts have a habit of bouncing around in our brain and raising stress levels.

You don't have to do everything all at once...just pick one thing that sounds like you could do it and start with that. The goal is to balance out all the stress in your life with things that replenish you and rejuvenate you.

I hope that helps...let us know how it goes.

Thanks for this!

hi there,
i have had symptoms very similar to this (and more - eep!) over a few years. it only tends to happen when i am very stressed. i started a thread about it in this forum about a week ago - i told my pdoc and he told me not to worry about it - i wasn't going "crazy".
he did suggest that if i needed to sleep and that the voices were keeping me up, he could give me an antipsychotic. i have been on them before and they are ok - work very quickly - only needed to take it for one or 2 days.
the suggestions Owl made are very helpful. i hope you try some of them out and find them useful.
could you not go to a GP about this? they might be able to do a proper check and reassure you that everything is ok.

thanks for your reply .. i cannot go to any dr at this time.
in the past i was given anti psychotics - anti depressants .. a list of both of them and not one worked for me .. in fact .. they worked opposite of what they were meant for and have been hospitalized over and over due to their effects.
what causes the voices to happen like that? what is it?
so many questions .. like why can i feel some things but not other things?
stress does this? i just dont understand what is taking place ..
sometimes all i can do is sit and stare..i dont have the strength to go crazy .. takes to much energy. inside however is alot of noise at times .. it just doesnt come out i go silent.

Hi there,

You know stress can cause hallucinations. It's very well documented so I think the main thing for you is to focus on destressing your life to the best of your ability. Try to stay in the present moment and do some meditation.

Love and Hugs
Tara
