I have to take a major related elective, and the only classes that are open are a sociology class and two psych classes which both sound pretty good so I'm trying to figure out which one to take. Here are the choices:

Health and Psychology
Health psychology is a survey course exploring the relationship between behavior and health. All topics will be covered from a bio-psychosocial perspective, illustrating the interaction among variables within an individual's environment. Topics discussed within the course include: psycho-neuroimmunology, anger/hostility and health, smoking cessation, weight control, health care systems, heart disease, cancer, AIDS, psychosomatic illness, gender and socio-cultural differences, stress, pain management and alternative treatments.

Counseling and Psychotherapy
An introduction to techniques and theories of counseling and psychotherapy. Components, which are believed to underlie effective counseling and therapy regardless of theoretical orientation and which are applicable to a variety of interpersonal situations, are studied in some detail. The major theoretical approaches to counseling are covered, and students are introduced to research on the process and effectiveness of psychotherapy. One area in which such skills are applied-the treatment of persons with emotional problems-will be examined. This course does not attempt to train professional counselors, but to provide a framework and a basis for understanding and evaluating the counseling process from which students can, after further training and experience, become effective counselors.

Conflict Resolution
This course will introduce students to the field of conflict resolution. It will include an overview of the history and theories of the field and some of the major critiques of present theories and practices. The course also will provide students with an understanding of the spectrum of role professionals in conflict resolution undertake. Students will gain selected conflict resolution skills and come to understand conflict experientially by participating in three role plays demonstrating issues associated with inter-personal, inter-group and organizational conflict.

Which one should I take?

I would have to ask two things, 1. what are you going into when you graduate that one class or the other might be more beneficial /applicable to your field or practice; and/or 2. does one of the classes have something in it you are not familiar with that peaks your curiosity that you would like to know more? Then thirdly from a practical standpoint, do anyone of them fit better into your schedule than the others?

For me personally, I know that the classes I have taken in conflict resolution have helped me all areas of my life. Health and Pyschology seems like it would be applicable to many areas as well. I would lean towards it as well personally over Counseling and Psychotherapy. However, I am not in this field anymore and are personal interests. Hopefully someone in the field will weigh in.

Not sure if this helps at all. I wish you luck and hope you enjoy whichever class you choose; I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

All fit with my schedule fine, and all sound fairly interesting, though the conflict resolution one is probably my last choice. I'm a nursing major, so while the health one seems to make the most sense at first thought, the others fit as well...

I think it's a personal choice as to which interests you most or which you feel you would use more in the future. As you say, they all "fit". Personally, I would take the Health one as it would help me individually as well as, if I were going to be a nurse, professionally.

Unless you plan to be a nurse therapist, the counseling one might be interesting but don't know that it would be too practical and, unless you plan to go into management, don't know that the conflict resolution one would be very useful?

I ended up signing up for the counseling class. My advisor said it would be a good class, it's a better time (TTH 10-11:15 vs. a 5:30-8:30pm time slot -- yuck!). We also take a community health class in my program, so it's cool. And if I really want to take one of the others, there's always other semesters.

im in a counseling class now, i dont like it. in fact i have it at 8 am tomorrow and it is a waste of time. the professor always goes on borderline personality tangents, it is her favorite thng to talk about and we always get out late because of it grrr. so i hope you enjoy your counseling class.
