My laptop just crashed midway through a file save! I didn't back it up and now the file is corrupted and I can't recover it D: Gaaaahh I'm so annoyed, I've found this essay ridiculously hard ot write and today was finally a good day where I had some flashes of inspriation and everything was going well and now it's all gone nooooo

Omg that sucks so bad! It's happened to me before and I know how terrible it feels! I'm no computer professional but if the file's still there you just can't open it, there should probably be some remnant of your essay there.. I don't know, I'd try opening it with notepad or google problems (I'm sure there are 'unscramblers' out there, people can even recover information from burnt computers, so..) But if you can't recover any, then I guess you just have to deal with it. Give yourself a piece of pie and keep strong!

Haha thanks guys! I ended up spending an hour trying to recover it an unscramble it... I'm not very PC-literate but my Dad helped and we still couldn't recover it. However I've now retyped it all from memory

Oh, I've had that happen to me with an external hard drive; it's not a good feeling to suddenly lose a bunch of information.
