I'm quite frustrated at the moment. I went back to school and was doing great... and then my depression hit again. I had to quit because I wasn't able to focus. I want to return to classes now, but I am afraid that I won't be able to do so successfully as it is a very difficult program.

Just looking for some ideas on getting back to classes, and some support in the meantime.

I think the first thing I would do is try to make a support system on or near campus. Find a T, and if necessary, a Pdoc. Next, I would also investigate what my previous school referred to as the Mental Disabilities Center. There I had a caseworker that worked with me to determine if I needed accommodations, would write letters to my professors alerting them to my accommodations, and would meet with me every so often throughout the semester to see how I was doing.

Next, once you actually get back on campus and start classes, talk to your professors from the very beginning. If they know you, and realize that you are working on keeping your depression under control (therapy, medications if necessary, etc.), then they'll be more understanding if you do start slipping. It's harder for professors to be understanding when some random student who seemed to be doing fine comes up to them and tell them they're depressed and can't do the work.

In the meantime, can you take any of your courses on line? What helped me was getting a part time job, proving to myself that I could hold on to it, take on responsibilities and commitments, while working through my depression and anxiety. I'm also planning on returning (hopefully, if accepted) next semester, but only part time. Take baby steps; if you bite off more than you can chew, you could end up stressing yourself out and sending yourself back into a depression. Build a strong support system, open lines of communication, and take baby steps to getting back to where you want to be.

Hi! Roman has some great ideas. I used to be a college professor, and I can say, from my standpoint, that I was always more willing to work with a student if I knew why the student was struggling.....Plus, there should be some resources on campus to help you out.

Also, is there any way you can take a lighter load?

Do you have a therapist who can work with you on ways to deal with stress, etc.?

You certainly have our support. Hang in there and do see what options are available.

Thank you for your replies. I talked with my therapist and she doesn't think it's a good time to return to school yet.. she's like to see me more stable.

My program is online, so that is better for me than having to get up and go to classes... but is also harder because I have to be more disciplined. It is possible to take fewer courses, but they are quite expensive... one course tuition is the same as 3 courses. So financially, I really need to work on the higher level of courses. I have thought about going back with one course the first semester, even though that is really really expensive.

I guess it's a moot point right now until my t says it's okay to return.

I agree. Follow your T's advice. I know what's it's like to try something when I'm not ready.....Not good. Remember that your health comes first. Take care!
