Hi,
I am an older student, currently have a class (Risk exposure in the workplace) and the bulk of the class is other students giving presentations. First presenter of the first team went off on a tangent speaking about the category of "ancestry and social environment" as part of an accident causation theory. That category is quite broad including family cultures of disregarding authority, hereditary diseases, substance abuse etc etc etc as a factor in on the job injuries. Well, this complete dumbass girl chose to focus on schizophrenics in the workplace, talked about a tv show that had a schizophrenic talking to a dog, made fun of all schizophrenics, suggested screening before hiring to try and not hire anyone with that disorder, and even said "it's probably illegal, but you should monitor that they are taking their medication because......". Now, I am torn, this "girl" suggested breaking the law, discriminating against people with a disability, and was just plain offensive on top of being stupid as dirt. I resent having to sit through classes that misinformation in the form of other students doing the teaching, and really am considering sending the instructor an email. So, any thoughts? |

I think you should send an email to the teacher... That is legitimate reason...

it sounds like the presenter made some remarks that as well as being discriminatory and hurtful, were also incorrect, and therefore not at all helpful in a teaching environment. i think you should contact the department head.

total discrimination and your feelings are valid, I'd lodge a complaint in that position.

This is actually a little tricky. I'm sure you're instructor would handle the email professionally, and I would recommend sending it. But, just like you (Cleaning up) said, this girl is "stupid as dirt" and students should know better than to base their facts on a girl's very opinionated view of the disability. Unfortunately the world is full of people like that. Case and point: internet rumors.

You all don't get to ask questions or comment on the presentations? I would drop the class if you can, take something else.

Sad to say, she was certainly perpetuating the stigma and myths about mental illness. I wonder why she was so much on her high horse about schizophrenics?
I agree that a note to your prof indicating data rebutting the girl's comments are in order. It would be appropriate for students to be able to discuss presentations! |

Hi, thanks for the comments, and to answer some questions posted here, no, there is no question and answer period after the presentations, and I cannot drop the class. I wouldn't drop a class anyway because of one person's stupidity, we can't run away from the idiots, the key is to stand up for things you believe in, not go away and let the morons continue on unchallenged.
I have NOT contacted the instructor, have asked a few students what they thought, and mentioned my opinion of how sub standard her presentation was. Again, thanks for your responses! |
