I think you would have to find a specific program/school that has library assisting for a certificate. I have a friend that did children's librarian assisting through an online program at a college located at the other end of the state. I believe it was a two year program. You could go to your local library and ask them. If they don't have the answer, they will help you find it. They also might have shelving positions open that you could apply for to get your foot in the door.

Good luck!

At the library where I work, library assistant is an entry level position that requires experience working with the public and clerical experience, plus a high school diploma.
Shelving is done largely by volunteers.

Every library is different. The library where I worked, shelving was a paid position. I believe the next position up was officially called Library Assistant or something along those lines. I tried to apply for those, but I was competing with students in the library sciences program or just graduated (I live right next to one, happens to be a good one). I think there were also Assistant Librarians and Librarians, but I can't remember distinctly...

I really think the best idea would just be to go talk to your library and find out how it runs.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Look at a basic job description:

Library Assistant Job Description, Duties and Jobs - Part 1

Library Assistant: Employment Info and Requirements for Becoming a Library Assistant

and take courses that would give you those skills and education.

I applied for a library assistant job once and the interviewed asked about the last couple books I had read, their titles and authors and why I read those books, what I learned from them and what they were "about" (I had to give a synopsis). So, I'd certainly do my English studies and pay attention to why I wanted to work in a library other than "I really like books/to read", I'd go into more detail with myself about my reading.
