I have been couch-locked for three days watching Parks and Recreation.
I should be studying for my final exams, which I have to take in three days. If I receive less than a 90% on any of these, I won't cut it for the Honor Roll. And then what university will accept me? Supposedly getting into a good school is my primary goal. However, my brain seems to enjoy tricking me into ditching all of my responsibilities and completely screwing me over. I am a nervous wreck about my grades. Why do I keep clicking "next episode?" Why haven't I washed my hair? Why is my room a disaster? Why am I such an apathetic blob of hopelessness? |

I read this and I immediately thought of "fear". Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of doing the work. I personally don't believe in laziness. I think that everyone wants to feel good about themselves and succeed. A lack of motivation, to me, usually is the result of fear. It's so much easier to say, "oh i didn't have time" or "oh i didn't study" to explain a bad grade or not meeting your goal (getting a 90% or better). Do you find that to be true? Have you ever envisioned yourself earning a 100%? or some other positive outcome? Have you imagined how good that might feel? No one can motivate you... that has to come from you. One of my favorite self-help people said, "Remember the *why*. Remember why you wanted this in the first place and use that as a source of motivation".

I'm hooked on "Castle". Convince yourself you are in an episode and wash your hair and do some cleanup as April, be as negative as you want. Then take the most appealing book you have and put it next to you, open it and glance at headings and read a bit between shows, before you hit the "next" button. Maybe you can switch it over so a show is a "reward" for every 45 minutes work?

I think every student has probably gone through a phase like that when they should be studying instead. The important thing is not to get too down on yourself. Everyone is allowed a little time to hide out from reality. As long as you're aware of your responsibility - forgive yourself, shake it off, and set yourself a goal and a deadline.
