So apparently the average amount of time spent on homework for high school students is about 3.5 hours a day, which is far from what I'm doing.
I'm a sophomore taking honors English, Chinese, Pre-Calculus, Honors Chemistry, and AP European History. On average I get about half an hour of English, half an hour of Chinese, an hour of math, an hour of chemistry, and an hour and a half of AP Euro- which adds to 4.5 hours (not too bad I guess) but it takes me much longer to accomplish due to my inability to concentrate. I get home at around 4:30-5:00 on the average day due to extracurriculars and usually stay up until midnight working on homework, usually without even taking a break for dinner. My question is, is it normal to spend this much time on something that should only take 4 and a half hours? Is it normal to have this much homework (excluding studying and assuming that it's done without breaks or lapses in concentration)? How damaging is it to my health? Note: I also have a 0 period class that starts at 6:45 AM which means that I wake up at 5:30 |

At the last school I taught at 3-3.5 hours a night was considered the "norm".
Personally I think it's just a tad bit excessive..... Homework should only be given when it's a meaningful extension to a lesson and not just take up your time plodding through worksheets for the sake of homework. You do need some "down time" each day when you're away from school and the textbooks in order to recoup your mind. |

Do you have ADHD? I do, and I wonder how I ever finished school.

I suspect that I do have ADHD since I match about 90% of the symptoms and my ADHD friend was actually shocked to find out that I've never actually been diagnosed with it. My parents have always told me to try harder and refused to have me evaluated because they thought I wasn't trying at all.

Average is kind of meaningless unless you consider yourself average? It sounds like you are taking a lot of intense classes, more than the average student. I would only take what you want, what feels healthy and doable to you.
What are your goals for the courses you are taking? I had AP European History (I have degree in history) but think I would have just taken something else rather than the AP if I could do it again. You get to college and the difference between taking "this" course or "that" is not so great, especially in the first couple years. With my 20-20 hindsight ![]()

How do you feel spending that amount of time on your work? Do you hate it and resent it? Do you enjoy it? If you enjoy it, then it won't really feel like work. Sometimes people wonder how you get these amazingly smart people at physics, or whatever. Then it turns out that these amazingly smart people just live and breathe and love physics. They see it everywhere. They solve physics problems for fun the way other people watch TV for fun.
