In six to nine months, I will be graduating from a junior college with an Associates Degree in Business Technology. I was also thinking about working towards a Certificate in Basic Healthcare, as it would require only four additional classes.

I have Social Anxiety Disorder. This has made attending class and spending time with others very difficult. Even walking into a grocery or clothing store is painful.

Through various experiences in the past three years, I have learnt that I cannot handle customer-service intensive jobs. I am barely able to adjust to my co-workers; trying to adjust to dozens of new people on a daily basis is overwhelming.

My question is this: With an AAS in Business Technology (and possibly a Certificate in Basic Healthcare), what type of career could I obtain that requires a minimum amount of social interaction? I am looking into becoming a Medical Transcriptionist or Word Processor, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

Thank you for your time!

I think behind the scenes in the healthcare field, seems a likely fit. Hope all goes well for you.

There are no "word processing" jobs anymore (that's what I did for a living for 20 years, now everyone has to do their own word processing or is an "administrative assistant" a very public role) and medical transcription AHDI > Home requires different, more advanced training than you will probably have:

Find an Approved Healthcare Documentation School

I would look at the jobs available at your local hospital(s), like "record clerk" and see what they require:

(from my local hospital)

Careers for those with social anxiety?

and then see how to get the "experience" (send resume's out to local doctors to see if they need an extra clerk or seasonal help, etc.) If you have friends/family members or their friends who are in the medical field, see if they can find you a job through their contacts (how I heard about and got my second job, a friend of my parents').

Depending on how large a metropolitan area you live near, I would check for medical libraries (often part of university hospitals)? You could get a job there and then that would probably work to show you are interested in the medical profession, etc.

But look in likely places for types of real jobs and what they want for education and experience and start to target for what you need. Maybe you could combine something like working for a clinic/doctor that could help with your social anxiety? :-)

I'm sure there would be jobs out there where you don't have to deal with customers or be in the front line.

Hope it all works out for you

I'm sorry to hear about the dilema that you're in.

Whilst you may not necessarily have to be in the front line at work dealing direct with customers, you will, somehow or other be liaising with others through some means of way.

I had a quick look for some Blogs here if you want to have a read through them:

I'm a claims processor at a TPA and I work with 10 other people and I don't have to be on the phones once I explained my situation to my boss, I'm lucky but maybe you can find a similar job where you are!
Thanks for this!

Any type of clerical work might be best. Office work (not secretarial) more computer based work, behind the scenes type jobs sound ideal. This can be anywhere, government, hospital, etc. Sometimes you might be required to help a customer but if you find the right position its usually just paperwork type duties.

Are you comfortable at least speaking with others through the phone?
