1. How to Memorize for Tests and Examinations - By Robert Lighter – Exam and Test Writing This text provides students with research supported memorization techniques and study skills. The text is based on a research booklet that was used on students who were performing poorly academically. The project group experienced considerable success and the research team decided to release the text to the public. Lighter’s text is better suited for individuals who are required to memorize fact-based information (e.g., biology, chemistry, history, sociology). 2. The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking – By Edward Burger – Critical Thinking Many courses require you to be able to articulate your own arguments be able to discuss them. Burger’s suggestions may be helpful for students who experience difficulties with critical thinking. Certainly useful for students who struggle with thinking ‘outside of the box.’ 3. McGraw-Hill Handbook for English and Grammar Usage – By Mark Lester – Writing No matter what course you take, you will be graded on how well you are able to express yourself and articulate your ideas. This handbook is a staple for any student returning to school. Obtaining a conceptualization of basic writing principles will help improve your writing and development as a student. 4. A Mind for Numbers – by Barbara Oakley – Mathematics For those struggling with math, this book will help you obtain important study skills that will help you better be able to work with equations and problem solving questions. 5. Make it Stick – by Peter Brown - Procrastination Many of us spend much of our time doing activities, which can take us away from the activities that are important for us to accomplish. Brown’s text discusses how to find value in those important activities and use it as a motivator to see change. 6. How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends – By Dan Gabor – Networking When at school, it’s important to network and build a social circle to support you during your studies. Dan Gabor outlines useful strategies to help break the ice, build on conversations and sustain ongoing relationships. 7. Smarter Notes: How to Enhance Your Note Taking and Study Smarter in Less time – By Brandon Monaghan – Note Taking This simple to read text provides students with the fundamental knowledge of how to take better notes in class. Monaghan offers strategies to help decipher what should be written down and what should not. The goal is to help students keep a balance between listening and writing. 8. Breakthrough Rapid Reading – By Peter Kump – Speed Reading At times, the number of readings required by a student can become overwhelming. This text offers strategies to help students improve their reading skills. Kump describes how movements of the eyes can influence how fast an individual can read. The further away the text is from the center of the eye, the smoother the eye flows across the page. 9. Mind Over Mood – by Greenberger and Padesky – Exam Anxiety Many of us experience difficulties with exam anxiety from time to time. Anxiety may affect the way we sleep, eat and concentrate. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is suggested to be the most effective method for treating such anxiety. Techniques such as thought records or core belief records could help ease your anxiety before entering a testing situation. 10. Eat That Frog - by Bryan Tracy – Time Management This text provides a number of useful strategies that could help students who experience difficulties managing their time. Tracy also speaks to issues such as procrastination and motivation. Simple and quick to read. |
