My best friend and I had this gut feeling: this would be the year that defines us! That was until we got our first slips of homework.. until we realized how much time we'd spend apart.. until I suddenly felt alone..
I can walk maybe a little more than half the day in my walker but our school has another academic building attached to it that is too far for me to walk so I have to transfer into a wheelchair. There is one obsticle that stands in front of me and my one class over in "greenheck" five non-accesible push and pull doors. Have you ever been stuck somewhere in public, like actually trapped but no one knows your there? That's how it feels to pull myself through those metal doors. The approved legal solution would have been to have one accessible doorway per entrance. My schools solution: make me figure it out on my own to the point of tears and then change my schedule take away the teachers who I am most passionate about and who care about our disabled community for random teachers that fit my "new and approved" schedule. I told them I was fine with my schedule so long as I had the same teachers and lunch it's the first week for God's sake. Only after bursting out in tears to my bio teacher of whom I would've lost in the transition -plus no improvements would be made and I have a right to all the same classes as another student- he said he'd get someone to take me to the building (not an unreliable student.. although no one ever wants to help me get from class to class anyway) and my only thought was: why the hell wasn't that their first idea? Oh yeah because we can't afford anyone! I am mad to the point of tears no one understands how deeply affected I am... how when facing my bio teacher I had to choke down uncontrollable sobs.. because he's the one teacher who's ever said he's going to make kids understand my disability and that it doesn't define me. |

I'm sorry, AHeartOfRuby. I've had to be in a wheelchair a few times because of knee surgery and such, so I can appreciate how difficult getting around in one can be--even in places that are supposedly handicap equipped. It's very frustrating.

I'm sure it was. I'm glad they're finally helping you out. It's too bad you had to suffer before they got on the ball.
