I can't concentrate anymore and it's just too loud. I'm meant to be revising for tests (in Y13 in UK) but I can't concentrate on anything. I did a test last week and barely answered anything because they were telling me not to (normally get A*/A, ended up with a U). I don't know what to do. It was never this bad but I just don't know how to keep calm and stop it.

Hi @capital32 I don't really understand the UK schooling system but I understand that tests are really important. Is it loud outside of your head or inside of your head? Like is it external? Can you get some noise cancelling headphones? Or is it voices and stuff talking to you? In which case, can you get what they call here in the states an IEP, Individualized Educational Plan? That way you could get more time and stuff on your tests. It sounds like you might have anxiety (not a doctor, just an ordinary person) or there might be something else going on. Perhaps a trip to your GP would be in order just to rule anything out. Have you talked to your parents about what is going on with you? Are they usually helpful? If not is there another adult that you can talk to that would be helpful to you? Wishing you the best, Kit

Hey,Maybe you should focus on the things that matter to you and learn what makes you calm even if its a cuppa tea and a few biscuits? Or listening your favourite song(this stops me from the voices) YOu should really think of talking to a doctor and they might prescribe you something for that also.DOn't be afraid to talk it out

I am so sorry this is happening to You, @capital32! It DOES seem awful! Are you seeing a Therapist or a Pdoc? I feel like that will REALLY help you! Please do consider and try to practice self-care as much as you can. You deserve to live a Good Life! Please do stay safe! I COMPLETELY agree with ALL the other wise and wonderful posters! Set up your environment to be productive for study.
a nice warm coffee a tidy desk spare notebooks a Laptop or Pen Peace & quiet. Getting your environment right will help you revise, as long as you schedule a couple of hours at a time. This will all help take the stress away, and get you back to those A grades! Good Luck! |

I used to have to go to one specific place that helped me focus. It started as the library until kids started partying outside the front entrance. Then it was a coffee shop, but I kept spending too much. Eventually it became a table outside in the halls near a college classroom or office. A few times I had to wait until nighttime and sit in my front room while it looked completely different, and play music. Sometimes, I had to describe it to my kids as a way of understanding it by explaining it. Different study modes do exist, and if you're only using one study mode because you're used to it, then it's the same as feeding your brain the same dinner every night. Changing your environment can change the way your brain chemicals work. Changing your food choice also will jolt your senses awake. Eating chocolate or chewing gum will also increase focus.
Nowadays my personal option is to sit in the front room with the window shades open, the cats aloof, and "In this Moment" station blaring on iHeart radio through my headphones. Last month I needed candles, incense and Skyrim exploration suite on YouTube. Take your brain on dates and it will be happy to declutter for you. I agree with people saying noise canceling headphones are a great way to block out voices. If you’re like me and cannot focus as well with certain types of music playing, I recommend low to medium volume when studying. However, some genres such as classical music, doom metal, or chill step are some genres I can listen to and still study and those may work for you too.
