I got to thinking today about the common use of the term "trigger" when discussing things that might stir us up: perhaps spark a challenge with an addictive substance, or a spike or drop in our moods.

Then as I thought about it, "trigger" is the a trigger itself! A better term, is "test." "As in 'I was tested today when someone brought out alcohol at the office party." We can pass tests; and I'd never want to be on the business end of a trigger.

I like your reframing of the word "trigger."

They call it a trigger cause it might mean the end of your life.

Yes, they do. I call it a test, as I might pass the challenge and save my life. We each can be in charge of what we call things to ourselves. I wasn't at the meeting that coined the term trigger (meaning it is a human decision to call it that, rather than something else, we just don't know by whom.)

I just go after the trigger until I disarm it so it is no longer triggering. To me, a test is something from outside me I don't haven any control over; it's like a bad pop-up quiz but my triggers are mine, a form of Russian roulette, and I don't want to play that game, dance to their tune at all.

Perna, that's great! What are some ways you go after the trigger and disarm it?
