Hey, there.
I was born and grew up in Ohio. I moved to a different state though. Please tell me about the NAMI support group meeting. I have been thinking about attending one in this state. But, I am hesitating because it is at a psychiatric hospital that I have only visited twice to visit a friend and is directed at all consumers rather than just people with one specific problem.(I mean if you go to it of course.)

Yes, the NAMI Cares (support groups) are lead by consumers (people with a mental illness) & the people who participate have a range of mental illnesses. I've gone to a couple in my area, but found the leaders were not consistent in showing up. I can understand if they are having a relapse or something, but it is discouraging to drive there & find it isn't happening. Plus they tend to be kinda rigid in their structure. Probably to help the leaders feel like they know what to do since they are not "experts." I went to one where a couple had a huge, scary fight in front of us all & no one knew how to diffuse it.

That said, I have learned a lot in their Peer-to-Peer, WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) & IMR (Illness Management & Recovery) classes.

I go to a support group that is led by the head of the local mental health assoc. It is specifically for people with depression & bipolar & is fantastic. The leader had bp, as well, so she can really understand us. We feel like we are equals & learn a lot (she brings in specific stuff to discuss unless the group or an individual wants to talk about something else--very flexible.)

You might also look for a DBSA group (if you have depression or bp).--Suzy

My county hospitals and/or libraries have often had outreach mental health support groups of various kinds that have intrigued me.
