Hello,
I am wondering if anyone has tips on how to ameliorate concentration problems. I don't have ADHD but since being diagnosed with depression/anxiety I have had an extreme inability to concentrate and stay motivated. My brain seems to function in the exact opposite way of someone with ADHD-- instead of being distracted and disorganized, it will take me hours to write a small paper because I will sit at my desk and stare at a blank computer screen or piece of paper and my brain seems to go blank.

I've struggled through school and I managed to get through it, but now I have to take some more tests which will require a great deal of preparation. Does anyone have ideas to help me which do not require more medication? I take Adderall and it does help to some extent, but I can feel my body getting too dependent on it. I've been on so many meds that I am hesitant to try something new/ ask for another increase of Adderall. It's frustrating because the meds I've taken have helped my other depressive symptoms but have not helped my concentration at all, and it's not an issue of disorganization or over-stimulation.

What do you do when you can't concentrate or stay motivated?

Hello, Adele, and welcome to Psych Central! You are right that depression can cause concentration problems. Off hand, I don't know what to suggest, except maybe getting somebody else to politely help you to stay on track.

Maybe you can check in the Depression forum here.

And are you seeing a therapist? Maybe he/she can offer some ideas.

Or somebody else here can.....

Anybody?

As for concentration I firstly make sure your physical needs are covered first so that's making sure you eat regularly, get 8hours sleep and exercise regularly etc.

Then if you are working on a project or something remove all distractions and anything that will stop you from working, grab that coffee and get working.
Also find out if you can change the layout of the page so that all of the toolbars are removed temporary.
