I found that studying the Myers Briggs Personality Inventory System to be very helpful as a start in understanding myself. It is very accessible on the Internet, maybe you would enjoy looking at it or have already done so. Of course I suppose for more serious cases, therapy would have to follow.

Myers Briggs gives an assessment of personality traits. There are also articles about these at PC
Psych Central - Search results for Personality Inventor

Are you familiar with the quizzes to compare traits with those who have specific disorders:
Psychological Tests and Quizzes

ENFP's Rock...yeah!! Sorry couldn't help myself. The OP does have a point. This helped me focus on what I wanted from my career, where my strenghts and weakness, why I do many of the thing I do and how to stop doing the stuff I don't like about myself.

I have recommended this to many of my friends and now I'm recommending it to you...go do it...now...go on...what are you waiting for...why are you still reading this. go now

There is one other benefit of reading about Myers Briggs: it's a lot of FUN to see which real famous people are coded which way according to the system.
