I found that studying the Myers Briggs Personality Inventory System to be very helpful as a start in understanding myself. It is very accessible on the Internet, maybe you would enjoy looking at it or have already done so. Of course I suppose for more serious cases, therapy would have to follow.

ENFP's Rock...yeah!! Sorry couldn't help myself. The OP does have a point. This helped me focus on what I wanted from my career, where my strenghts and weakness, why I do many of the thing I do and how to stop doing the stuff I don't like about myself.

There is one other benefit of reading about Myers Briggs: it's a lot of FUN to see which real famous people are coded which way according to the system.
