Ok, now I want to start out by saying I'm am not sure how long I have been doing this except since I was a young child. I am now 28, I bite my nails to the point that they bleed. In my mind they all need to be the same length and that length is short, I peel the skin around and I have been biting them so long that my nails are actually growing into the skin. I try fake nails and while they work for a time if the nails get messed up before I can afford them again I bite those off, I have tried the nasty nail polish, slapping my self, all kinds of things and I CANNOT get rid of this habit. I do it when I'm bored, when I'm anxious, and I even do and and am unaware that I am doing so. I do not know what to do, I was sexually molested as a child and maybe this is a coping mechanism, or maybe this is a compulsion. I do not know but does anyone else here suffer from it, or have any tips on how to stop it. My nails and fingers would greatly appreciate it.

Hello BlueEyez87: I read your post yesterday but did not reply since I didn't think I really had anything useful to contribute. However, since no one else has yet replied to your post, I thought I would.

I'm an older person now. However, many years ago, when I was growing up, I bit my nails. As a young adult I wanted to break myself of the habit. What I did was to simply keep my nails trimmed very short. I also carried a fingernail clipper with me at all times. Anytime I would notice any roughness to a nail, or loose skin around them, I would use the fingernail clipper to trim it & smooth it over right away. This worked for me.

Of course, as you are clearly aware, the compulsion to bite your nails is a symptom of underlying issues... anxiety, fear, etc... one that over the years has become a deep-seated habit or compulsion. So, while figuring out some way to stop biting your nails is certainly worthwhile, what would be of even more benefit would be if you could resolve the mental health issues that are at the root of this habit. I wish you well...
