For the sake of discussion, where do you draw the line? Do you think that scarification, self-piercing, play piercing, etc is considered self injurious? I'm just curious as to what you all think.

interesting question!

all of my piercings have happened at times of stress, so i think the two may be linked (for me). i have also planned tattoos/scarifications, but i didnt go through with them in the end (part aesthetic reasons, partly because "the urge" had gone).

i wonder how/why ppl who dont self injur decide to go ahead with body modifications. i think it would be a really interesting thought process to follow.

I think it depends what your reasons are for getting piercings/tats/scars, etc. I know for myself all of my tattoos were because I thought they were sooooooooo pretty. I also love tattoos more than piercings because they're permanent-you never have to worry about them ripping out or losing them.

That being said, both piercings and tattoos have always been a nice distraction for me. The planning, the drawing, the procedure, the aftercare. Which might be kind of lame, but I did notice that thinking about getting something new always lifted my spirits and gave me something else to think about for a while.

I think play piercing is probably more along the lines of SI than self-piercing or having a scarificaion done. Just because of the repeitive behaviour. And I also think it's safer than regular SI because the mentality surrounding play piercing is that it's just for pleasure (pleasure in pain I guess) and I think mostly, proper precautions are taken in terms of cleanliness, etc, depending on if you do it with others or alone.

I am totally lost here. Does anyone have a link to where I could find out more info on this? My curiosity is here now. But I have no clue what anthing is exept the piercing and tattoos, which I have considered doing myself, but never followed thru with. I am curious about the other things.

I have one of a celtic pentagram on my arm.... it really looks good with my tatoos.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarification
Scarifying involves scratching, etching, or some sort of superficial cutting or incision. Scarification, in botany, involves cutting the seed coat using abrasion, thermal stress, or chemicals to encourage germination. In alternative contexts scarification may refer to the cutting of concrete using hydrodemolition, or as a permanent body modification, etching designs, pictures, or words into the skin.

Scarification?

I have 2 piercings that I did when I was frustrated and wanted to SI, but I kept them and love them to death. At the time, putting jewelry through it sort of justified it in my mind. I've also done some scarification as a result of stress/ needing release. But I make sure it's stuff I'm happy with...there's nothing that I regret later.
Thanks for this!

got 0 tatoos or piercings so cant speak to those but gobs and gobs of scars. i am not ashamed of them and i dont think they are artistic in the least but they represent (to me, as i consider other's observation of them) as symbols of my suffering. at the same time, i feel narcissitic in having that attitude. the reality for me is the very dangerous level of self-abuse that i have reached is destined to land me in the hospital. the urges for the past 90+ days since i stabbed myself repeatedly are overcome with the trauma of my family's worry. and i absolutely abhor involuntary (or any) committment in locked psych unit. it is hard to imagine succumbing to the frequent urges which is seems to provide some resolution for me. peace to all!

It's different for everybody, but for me, body piercing is not SI behavior. I've got my nose pierced, and a few in my ears. I did it for a good reason, and I don't regret it.

Those photos are so triggering. That should have come with a warning.
