I HATE how people judge others who SI...

I went to the red cross to donate blood today. Because of the tourniquet, the scars on my arm stood out even more than usual, so the doctor could easily see them. Because of this, he made sure to be extra rough with me. I told him afterward that he could have taken it a bit easier on me, and he said "What? You don't like the pain?" I HATE it when people judge me based on my scars...not to mention inflict more pain on me because of it.

(((((((((fallenangel)))))))))))) you should report that doctor. That type of behaviour is uncalled for, especially from someone who should actually know better... I think some doctors need a lesson in etiquette!

Judgmental people aren't cool.

Yeah, those people are just plain creeps
I know exactly what you're talking about
I would definitaly report it and even if it is not resolved, it will give that doctor a
black mark on his name and reputation
I know exactly what you are feeling, it happens to me too

Grr.....If I had been a nurse at the Red Cross and seen that I would have made sure that doctor NEVER did that again. The doctor would be lucky to still have eardrums after I was done.

Some people that are supposed to be professionals just act like pigs. I'm sorry.

I agree with Christina86. Report the doctor.

I told a nurse about him, and I made sure to leave a comment in my survey. Needless to say, I won't be going back to that red cross again.

Way to go
That was so assertive to take care of an issue without being aggressive or
passive
Keep up the awesome attitude
Keep up the great work, I'm so proud of you because it takes a lot of determination and courage to stand up for yourself like that!

His reaction just sort of worries me...can I never go donate blood again without being treated like crap? I like to know that I'm helping people, and I want to continue, but not if I'm going to have to go through that every time. I mean, my blood is no worse than anyone else's just because I SI...I wish people would stop acting like it is.

No, you can go donate blood again - this is about your contribution and you wanting to give back. Sounds like he is very insecure b/c he did not know what to say so instead he got mean. He might know someone that cuts and feel helpless as a dr. I don't know but maybe beyond reporting him you could take a moment to write him a note about how it made you feel and why you SI and what you are doing to get better. I would be mad also but the note may change the way he deals with the next person. With more understanding and some empathy.

When I got stitches for my SI the dr. made this rude comment about playing tick tack toe with the knife and I just looked at him and said, "No I was in pain and could not find a better way to handle it. I'm working on it in therapy." He got it and was incredibly nice to me and made sure while I was there to check in with me and be comforting until I was able to go home.

I encourage you to donate again, not enough people do it as is!

If you meet the same idiotic person again by some chance, run in the other direction... but beyond that, if you're treated badly again, continue to report people until it's known that you DESERVE TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT.

Eww... what an arsehole.

I know its hard when people think of it as just being 'silly' or 'pointless' - I dont think they realise how much pain were really in and what it puts us through.
Not everyone can, or will understand. Comments like that is what people like us have to get used to I guess *shrugs*

Hope ur okay xxx

No, we don't have to get used to it. I may be being really stubborn about this but what if we could help educate people that are dr.'s, nurses - people who went to school to help others?

I have a friend who is a nurse and she and I have talked about SI'ing. I have learned from her about the stigma and she has learned from me about how it's not really a choice - no one wants to hurt themselves but it's a way of coping.

I'm not saying I am going to wear short sleeves at work or when I go out socially. I don't need to do invite that kind of stigma or attention.

But...with professionals maybe I can take the chance so the next time they meet someone they might be a little more understanding.
Thanks for this!

I totally agree. It's not something I should have to get used to. It's something THEY should get used to. They need to understand that it's not about being suicidal or wanting anything other than relief...it's a coping method that some people resort to.

Yeah with me too during a medical test. I guess that this isn't such a rare thing seeing as we are all experiencing/feeling sympathy over this issue. My question: What's wrong with those doctors, we're human too!
