I will be moving to another state this fall for college. I think I should probably have a therapist on hand that I can speak with, just in case. I am unsure of how to find one that will not cost be anything ( I wont be able to afford it.) The school is in Henderson, TN, just outside of Jackson.

I don't know the American college system hardly at all - but maybe you can start with a counsellor at your college... or maybe look in the Yellow Pages for counsellors in the area of your college.

Halliebeth, does your college have a website? You might be able to look there and see what the counseling center has to offer. Many colleges have a counseling center and it's free to students. That would be a good place to start looking. If you want to tell me what college it is, I can try to look it up for you.

at my college, they have free counseling, and psychologist, and pschiatrist care. If you don't want to see one of them, id try calling one and asking for referrals. Usually the counseling offices know all the counselors in the area.

Hallie, I'd start here. You can ask for referrals also if you find that it isn't going to meet your needs.

Hi Hallie,

In terms of counseling, I would imagine most colleges in the US nowadays have a counseling center, or their health center should be able to give you a good referral if they don't. But most colleges offer good counseling options right on campus, and can refer students elsewhere if additional support is needed.

I know that it must have been very hard to hear your doctor's comments, that you could have other things going on. You may or may not - he may just want to check to be sure. On the plus side, though, if you do have any other disorders, it would be better to get those diagnosed and treated before you leave for college. One of my friends didn't realize that she had ADD until she was in her Sophomore year at an ivy league university, and it was really affecting her grades badly! Then she was able to get ADD testing, and medication, and that finally helped her. But it was very hard for her that first year. I think anything you can do to help yourself get a good start for college is well worth it. And if it turns out that you don't have those disorders, then you'll know those are things you don't have to worry about!

Thinking of you,
ErinBear

Sounds to me like you are doing everything you need to do to take care of yourself. You are asking the right questions and making the right plans. Find out for sure if you have ADD. I have it and the day I found out, well, it explained a lot. My doctor hasn't come right out and said I have bi polar, but I know she leans that way a bit.

You are doing great and now I want to check out the school to see what they offer.
