this was a book by writer Meera Syal who is an asian lady in the uk, and she wrote this about 3 best friends, asian women, and their lives with their marriages and so on. i've never read the book but the bbc are televising it, it started tonight. it was based around east london, and the show started with one character's wedding. the other two were guests. one in an unhappy marriage and the other a single career girl.

the one in the unhappy marriage was a self harmer, and it showed her harming - i wasn't expecting it to be so... graphic on bbc1 at 9.30 pm, but it was really well done, not graphic for the sake of it, but graphic to make a point.

the whole thing had me in floods to be honest - not just the s/h part (which was the first time i was triggered like that in a long time), but the way in which it highlighted just how much tradition can distort reality, and people's ideas about humanity. for instance the girl who got married was subject to domestic violence, but due to her upbringing she believed it was "normal" - it was so saddening....

life isn't all ha ha hee hee *tv show - may well trigger* i just thought people might find it interesting that SH is being discussed on mainstream primetime uk tv - i was definitely surprised. also, they interviewed the star/writer on a few chat shows and specifically asked her about the SH aspect. she was covering it really in relation to asian women who feel they really have no other outlet at all, but was clear that it wasn't just them, and that it is a huge issue here that needs to be addressed - i applaud her for (a) bringing it to the mainstream in a way that's thought provoking without being abrasive or offensive and (b) making a point of raising the issue as a talking point on extremely popular chat shows (she was on the most famous show here and talked about it at length - a very good interview) - it's about time it was dealt with in a mainstream way, but also sensitively, and she's doing that very well indeed.

if anyone is in the uk, part 2 is next tuesday, 9pm on bbc1 (i'm sure part one will be repeated)

Sadly I missed it - was asleep.

Friends who saw thought it was very well done and were pleased that in depicting an Asian adult SIing it went a long way towards challenging the stereotype of SIers as teenage white girls.

Might get the book.

Hi Dogtanian,

I agree with all you say - I watched it too. And was surprised to see her self harming. It started out as quite 'light' drama, I thought, and then turned darker as we saw beneath the surface.

Very surprising from BBC1, too. Maybe things are moving on, discussions opening up, can only be good.........specially as you say, she's not the stereotypical self harming person. Older peeps do it too life isn't all ha ha hee hee *tv show - may well trigger* .

Her husband played a therapist......interesting......

Take care - all of you ! Poppet

hey poppet, yes, that was a good point too, that her husband was a therapist - i thought the bit in the video where you saw him say "as a therapist you spot problems early on" and then it went to her talking about how sad she was. it was very very well done.

nice to see stereotypes being challenged and actually the public in general challenged - did you see her interviewed on parkinson? that was fantastic, he was totally ignorant of the phenomenon of sh, and made some comments that were frankly quite offensive, but she stuck to her guns and made him listen and talk about it. it was brilliant, i felt like cheering life isn't all ha ha hee hee *tv show - may well trigger*

i've done it - i've had people who've talked about that kind of thing in front of me not realising and i've just gone along with it. also i've had people asking why i do it blah blah out of the blue, and just shrugged it off. it's amazing how much the brain can shut down i guess
