hi, okay feel silly asking this, but i can't find answers on the internet and i'm somewhat paranoid about it. burned myself with a heated up knife a little over a week ago and its turned out much worse than anything ive ever done (hence the slight paranoia). going to the hospital or anything like that for it is out of the question. its third or forth degree & most of the dead skin & whatnot is cleaned off and i'm keeping neosporin on it. what i keep going back and forth about is whether or not i should put gauze over it! its roughly 3ish inches long and about the width of a pencil. ive been wearing shorts and not covering it the past few days, but its getting cooler and im going home and want to hide it. so i'm thinking gauze over it would be best under pants/ inside boots/ socks. but my paranoia wants other opinions! so any info would help really

Neosporin with a large (very large) bandaid. Anything non-stick. A gauze might pull off a scab. No vaseline or creams. Try ice for comfort, like a bag of frozen vegetables.
I am sorry. Hugs to you. |

nonstick bandages are a life saver. i make sure i have tons in my kit.
make sure the burn does not turn any strange colors, but i'm sure at this point it's fine if it's scabbed over. |

Wash it with a first aid wash every day, at least twice, but if you can't afford that then use some salt water.
It's gonna sting, but I doubt that's gonna worry you. Then pat it dry with something that's not fluffy or anything, like kitchen towel would be good. Then put a fair blob of antiseptic cream on it, then put on a large band-aid, or better yet a gauze with the shiny side down, and then wrap it. I've done a really bad burn one time and went through the same thing. It went all kinds of green during keeping it clean and stuff, but it eventually healed and scarred. |

It's still really red all the way around the burn & hot/ feverish too. It turns a more purpley tint when I walk on it a lot, but I figure that has to do with red oxygenated blood + blue deoxygenated blood making it look that way, since that color comes & goes. I've been alternating gobs of neosporin + the non stick bandages with just leaving it open so it can breathe, lately! Oh and lots of hydrogen peroxide to clean it. I hope I'm doing the right things. It's a LOT less painful than it was when feeling first came back to it, so I figure that's a good sign too!
Thanks! ![]() ![]() |
