If anyone could give me their opinion on my question, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Before I started cutting, I was originally a "scratcher".
(Yes, this background info is important)

I had always thought that my scratching was simply a anxiety driven thing. So I didn't really worry about it, even when I drew blood.

Now the more I think about it, the more I'm starting to question if my earlier behaviours of anxiety driven scratching is/was self-injury? (I seemed to at least mildly enjoy it, it got rid of my anxiety too)

I've done self-injuring without anxiety, so I think there may be a difference but I'm not sure.

Is there a difference betweeen anxiety-driven SIng and simple (by no means simple, but for lack of a better word) SIng?

Thanks, and sorry if I'm a bit confusing. This question seems really important to me for some reason.

It would seem that if you were causing some damage to your body by scratching and recieving relief from an emotional issue then yes i think it is SI. I hope this helps your question. Please take care.

Scratching is a form of SI, especially if it gives you an emotional relief.

Picking, scratching, cutting, burning, pulling your hair, breaking bones, sticking pins and things like that into your skin, etc. are all forms of self injury.

Just to add my thoughts here...Yes, I would see scratching to be a form of SI- from what I have learned from other ppl here. I had a similar question too, which I think I posted about (I can't remember now!!)- I started picking my lips- pulling the skin off them- when I was about 6 or 7 and never even imagined it as a form of SI until a couple of months ago. But it is a huge probelm for me, and my lips are in such a bad way now that if I try to smile to widely at the mo the bottom one is so raw it starts bleeding. So I guess that, as lex said, anything that brings emotional relief is SI...
