Is it bad to replace cutting with a different addiction? I feel like I have to have some sort of addiction to distract myself.

No it isn't bad to try to stop one habit with another. Just try to do a more healthier habit. There is always pros and cons to everything though. Sometimes it doesn't work, but it won't hurt to try a better and less harmful habit like wearing a rubber band on your wrist and when you think or get the temptation of wanting to self harm to flick the rubber band to yourself once each time. It isn't going to be the same as the other but it does have a little paint like you would with the other. And usually when someone SI's it is because they want to escape one pain with another, just with the rubber band the pain will be less but still can help on getting your mind off of the cutting and still has the pain but won't hurt you as bad but still allowing you to let out whatever is bothering you.

I don't think it is a bad thing to replace one SI method with another. The standard method for causing pain in a medical test is putting your hand in a bowl of ice water. It is painful but it doesn't cause any permanent damage if you stop after 2 mins. Holding ice cubes also works.
I found some distraction mehtods helpful to hold off the urges. Taking a hot shower calms me down, and taking a nap usually helps me. Hanging out with a friend or family member as well. Self harming is a way to cope. There are other ways to cope, but we get so overwhelmed we fall back to what we know works.
