Hello everyone

I have been a self harmer for some years now and myself and T have been working on ways to try and stop the self harm so she suggested a self soothing kit which are my 5 senses.

so I have thought about this and I am going to make my kit.

My 5 are.

See... Which is a photograph of family

Touch.. Teddybear.

Smell.. I have a smelly thing that smells of strawberries.

Hear.. My Ipod (took me 6 hours to do this)

Taste... Chocolate bar.

So every time I get the urge to self harm I will get these out and give it a try.

I am really going to see if this works for me and I will keep you updated.

I'm so glad you've got a T you're working with. This plan sounds good--taking best care of yourself is a great idea.
Thanks for this!

I have a Happy Box, for when I'm down, but am missing taste and smell. I'm going to add them. Thanks. My touch is a fidget, a tactile distraction thing I roll up and down my fingers. Oh, and a rubbing stone. I have an Ipod and pictures and quotes about courage.
Thanks for this!

Now I need to think of what I would like in a comfort kit for me, when I am in pain. Thanks Cutie!

this sounds neat.

i've heard of something like this, well... actually, it's very diffrent- it's where you have a box, and then in the box you just put in the comfort items that mean everything to you, and when you feel the urge, you just get out the box.

but the 5 senses idea.. seems a good idea while writing this message, but when it actually comes to doing it, like most things, i probably won't be motivated

on the subject of distractions, i've always liked the butterfly project as a good distraction even though i've had people say... blah blah blah, i don't like that- it's a useless idea... well it works for some people!

Thanks for bringing this up. I think this is a great idea - something for all 5 senses, that is.

this is what i've come up with:

hearing: a music box i used a lot as a kid

seeing: a rather nice picture of an island with palm trees (not sure what island, just found it online and printed it)

touch: a big rock my brother got me from the beach in florida

taste: cookies

and smell: lavender

It takes practice. It didn't work instantly for me either. Once my body got used to that as a cue to calm down it started to work.

I also have in mine...
A small pencil and some paper to write thoughts.
a prn for emergency shut downs when the box just isn't doing enough.
Emergency contact numbers, like the help line.

But... I've had a box for 7 yrs now. I think it can work. Sometimes it needs tweeking or adding to.

My box fits in one hand so I can take it with me.
