Warning: Trigger

I am 55 and made 16 long laddered cuts last week after a horrible fight with my husband over my cancer treatment. I started in high school but I don't think there was a category for it then. This is the first time in over a year. I realize that this is an extreme disassociation behavior, when I feel completely overwhelmed by a situation.

Hang in there. Even though my therp help me not to be so ashamed, it actually took reading a book about it that also taught how to stop that has really helped me. I think I posted it here somewhere. The impulses may never go completely away, but they will decrease the longer you stop. Be kind to yourself. It is obvious you are trying to cope with a something painful. SI is a coping skill. A poor one, but a way of coping nevertheless. You are doing what you can to take care of your emotional pain. The key is to learn new skills. I know it's difficult but don't give up. Take care

I am 55 and started to cut when I was 42. I was totally lost and was hospitalized. I was diagnosed
with bipolar and have been on meds since. You cant say if someone is to old or to young.

I'm 14.

Self injury knows no age. I started at around the age of 7. [not with cutting, but hitting myself at first. it later progressed to cutting around 11 or 12] And some people think it's super odd that I started that young. So I suppose I know what you're going through, just on the opposite side of the age spectrum. haha.

I'm nineteen, twenty in just over a month now.
I started when I was thirteen by cutting but I guess I'm always been a bit self harm inclined since I was little - I used to sit behind my bedroom door and repeatedly whack my head to calm down when I was angry or upset - I was about six then maybe?
Self harm doesn't really have an age limit, I guess I get why you're friend would say it as self harming can be seen as a "teen issue" but I think that's just the way it's been portrayed in the media and the like. We all cope the best we can, right? No matter how old we are

16 now, started cutting when I was 12 or 13, got worse in 8th grade and really bad in 9th grade. Went in to intensive DBT treatment the end of 9th grade and I'm in 10th now. I'm in my second round of DBT groups, and still in individual therapy 1-2 times a week and starting with a psychiatrist next week because I can't avoid meds anymore.
Thanks for this!

I turned four bazillion years old last month (or 48... pretty much the same thing).

I started a couple years ago. And honestly - I LOVE it. Going through therapy and DBT - but the truth is that I have no desire to quit. It works. Therapy is just a lot more work for a lesser effective means of coping.
Thanks for this!
