Hi, I been discussing this with my T. I am 2 months now without any cutting or burning. But I do have a bad habit of skin picking. I don't see that on the same level as cutting or burning but my T does.

I don't bleed from it. Sometimes I'm just rubbing my fingernail onto my finger, other times I pick skin off the finger.

What do you think? Is this SI?

Thanks!

Yes this is self injury. It is serving the same function as the cutting was. It is less injurious to you as you are not drawing blood, but it is still self injury.

I don't consider skin picking to be s.i. because when I do it, I legitimately don't know that i'm doing it nor do I look to necessarily do it when I feel the urge to self harm. I've been doing it for as long as I can remember and I think of it as a habit, not self harm.

If it is something you just started, or do in place of self harm then yes, I do think it counts.

Self harm does not need to be deliberate to be self harm. Personally I never realized I have a scratching problem until I drew blood by mistake.

I do this all the time too. I didn't realize it could be SI. I do it consciously to relieve stress. I never made the connection until now.

I consider it a form of SI yes. It gets addictive over time in the same way habits grow when you aren't looking. If you find it hard to stop picking at your skin then it's a problem.

I do this and I do consider it to be SI. I used to pick spots and found it very soothing. But they looked dreadful.
I have managed to stop most of that now, though when extra stressed I still do it.

I have never thought that it could be taken as a SI method...

I've just googled it and actually it is now a separate disorder in DSM-V which belongs to the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders...
Thanks for this!
