Hi
I've popped over from the psychotherapy forum ![]() I would really value some advice. I've SId off and on for about twenty years, often not doing it for a year or two. We're going over some really difficult stuff in therapy, and I've been SIing quite a bit over the past six months, maybe once or twice a week But I've noticed that I seem to be doing it a bit worse each time, and not caring about it so much. Like, I usually go over an old cut, so I don't get multiple scars, and usually just til it bleeds so it's never been bad. But now I feel like I just sort of go for it, get a bit carried away......sorry to be so graphic. ![]() Has anyone else experienced this? Is it possible for your pattern to change after so many years? Any tips on reining it in a bit? I don't want to stop, but it was manageable (and concealed) before.... Thanks |

Hi, Red75. I am thinking that really dealing with some painful issues in psychotherapy could be making it get worse. Have you told your therapist what is happening? I really think he/she should know.

Yes, it can definitely get worse suddenly. After a while what you have been doing stops being enough and you need something more to get that same kind of release you are craving. I'm not really sure what the answer is, and don't have tips I'm afraid. But I understand

In psychology, that's called an extinction burst. Totally normal, as time goes by it will lessen.
