I was just wondering... supposedly it usually begins when a person is in their early teens, but it doesn't always work that way...

I was 19.

self injuring is very triggering for me, so I don't talk about it much or come here to this forum often-- I'm sorry. At what age did you start to SI? (nothing against anyone that does-- I think it's great if coming here and/or talking about it helps you)

However, I feel OK to answer your question-- I first self-injured when I was 13 so I guess I meet the present day statistics-- though I don't put much stock in any statistics.

My mom told me what an idiot I was when she saw my arm and leg(at age 13)..... I've chosen throughout my life..... not to talk about it.

To all of you that self-injure--- At what age did you start to SI? At what age did you start to SI? At what age did you start to SI?

I wish I could definetely answer this one ...

I've been scratching for what seems like forever. Cutting happened within the last year.

I'm 20 right now.

I was five or six, but then biting was what I did. I remember how much it embarassed my mother. It changed over time. I'm not sure when I started scratching, but was in my 20s when scratching started tearing skin. That was when I started cutting too.

Officially, 12. However certain behaviors I exhibited earlier than that have made my psychologist and I wonder if it wasn't more around 5 (hair pulling, biting nails til they bled, and hitting myself).

Hmm, I was 14 when I started cutting, that kept on and led to hitting myself with objects etc until I was 23....I ceased with it all until now, where I'm cutting (very little) and hitting again......I'm 31
