I've tried using both recommended techniques, which I hear work very well for some people, but they don't seem to work for me. Elastic bands worked better for me (as they stimulate a very similar feeling as cutting) but I abused the use of the bands and found myself causing damage anyway with them, and the ice cube technique ... well, it was too different a feeling and did not alleviate my urges.
Has anyone have any success in stopping? Any advice on how to go about it? |

I tried those too..... no success here either.
I have had some success with immersing my head in cold, cold water. Several things can typically can help me are: - Distraction. Bury myself in work. - Reverse role. What would I tell my daughter if she was self-harming? - Exercise. Has to be intense. Not just a walk but a sweaty exercise. |

How about drawing/writing on your skin?

If the drawing thing helps - use it!!! Personally it does nothing for me.

I use straight up distractions. I ordered some adult coloring books off amazon and some colored pencils. They're very detailed and it's helped me learn to work with my mistakes instead of giving up.

I sleep instead, or relocate to a different room/place.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I really appreciate it
![]() I've tried the drawing on my skin along with using the elastic band technique. That helped for minor urges, but not extreme ones. Part of the problem for me is that it's not just the immediate release of SI, it's also the distracting pain from ,and tending to, the wounds in the following days. That's part of the ritual for me. I can't think of anything to replicate that. |
