It was been 20 months since I last SI'ed. While I'm so happy about making it that long SI free, there are days that the urges are strong and it can be a real struggle not to give in. I keep thinking that someday the urges will be no more than a fleeting thought, but that day definitely hasn't come.

Be proud of yourself. 20 months without! That's quite the accomplishment.

First, let me say congratulations to you on a very impressive accomplishment. Twenty months is great.

As for how long will the urges continue?? Your question reminded me of something. I was at my grand-fathers 90th birthday party, one of his sons playfully asked him "At what age do you stop noticing the pretty girls" without missing a beat he replied "you have to ask someone a lot older than me".

Point being, I think this will always be with us to some degree. Not much different than the alcoholic.

Congratulations on 20 months thats something to celebrate.

As far as will the urges ever stop, well that's different for everyone. I went 10 years without cutting then about 6 months ago relapsed. During those 10 years there were periods that I hardly ever thought about it, then I would go through weeks and even months were it was all I could think about. I would have my wife lock everything away so that I couldn't then work down the list of alternatives to SI that I found on this site. Its important however if you do relapse to accept it and jump back up on the wagon again.

At the worst times I found going to AA helped, SI seems remarkably similar to alcoholism and no one but my sponsor knew that I was there for SI and not drinking.

Well done. For me the urges come and go, but like an addiction, if I give into them then they get more powerful.
