There are several scar reduction creams you can purchase at Wal-Mart. They're not cheap
After an SI episode be sure to tend to the wound, cleaning it often and using antibiotic creams to prevent infection, and it will reduce the appearance of a scar.
I use Palmer's cocoa butter after the cut has healed to make the scars smoother and less noticeable.

I've used Bio-Oil for the past few months. I've found it's working better than the Palmer's cocoa butter and smells a lot better too, but is also more expensive. It's not making a huge effect, but some of the scars are definitely fading, though I'm not sure if that's due to time or if the oil is helping...

I've heard of Bio-oil working but the last time I checked they did not sell it in the States. I have not had much luck with the other otc meds but maybe they work well for other people.

Good suggestions. I am going to try something... I am wearing a sleeveless shirt to work today and my supervisor saw the scars on my upper arm... she was like, "What the heck happened to you?" I was so embarrassed. I couldn't even come up with anything. I sort of deferred the question.

Apparently they do, on this map - click! it shows the US, and if you click on the orange over the USA it lists suppliers...

neosporin is what i have always used, it works relatively well. Also one thing i did to make new cuts appear more healed for doc appt once was pack salt onto them. Somewhat painful, it burns but hey it got me past the doctor.

My doctor told me that vitamin e works pretty well on scars. I've tried it and it did make a difference. Maybe it would help you, too.

Wheatgerm oil is meant to be good (didn't do much for mine). Bio-oil is the best I've tried- I used it on some burns and not on 1 above them and there is a big difference, altho I didn't use it for very long and should go back to using it again...

Does bio-oil work on very old scars or just new ones?

I used the bio-oil on scars that were less than a year old (but more than 1-2mths old..sorry, can't remember exactly!) and got the above-mentioned results. I used the wheatgerm oil on scars that were 2 yrs old. These scars are now over 10yrs old and still quite noticable at times, altho when compared with the scar from where a mole was removed 4 yrs prior to them they are almost invisible! My psych nurse was going to look into the laser treatments used to remove tattoos. We haven't done so yet, but am hoping that when it is more affordable this might be an option.
