I mean it from more of a physical angle.
I mean at what time does it become a physical risk or more "dangerous" or more of a risky/serious problem? Stitches-deep? Less deep than that? Thoughts? |

Trigger warning.....
I know my case is pretty extreme. But mine went from cutting to life threatening when I cut through a surgical scar/incision and the blade perforated my abdomen. Last edited by notz; Jul 31, 2015 at 12:32 AM. Reason: added trigger icon |

Bacteria and viruses that could be sitting on whatever you use.

If you're not taking care of the wounds, then there's risk of infection. And I'd think if you're cutting in areas where you know there's a large vein or artery (like the wrist), that would be a risk if you cut too deep.

Personally, I do not think that cutting is "dangerous"..... However, I think it is a gateway to more and more destructive thinking. And thoughts eventually become action.
Just my two cents (over-valued as that may be).

I never thought it was "dangerous" either. My pdoc was trying to tell me that cutting deep and refusing to go for stitches could be considered risk of harm. I think it was just an empty vague threat so I would be more careful. He really doesn't like the deep cutting.

I don't think it's dangerous unless you hit an artery, and having tried that intentionally a few times, I can tell you that's VERY difficult even if you cut at the exact point you feel your pulse.
The way it's most dangerous is, I think, that SI lowers the treshold of a suicide [attempt]. |

Anytime, because when one does this they are typically unaware of the extent of the damage that they are inflicting on themselves. The act itself tends to be done so impulsively that one is somewhat dissociated from it all. Therefore, the act itself could evolve into a minor scrape or a nasty looking wound. Whenever I found myself engaged in the act itself, I have had little to no awareness of the extent of what I was doing. Luckily, nothing to serious happened as a result other than permanent scars and pretty nasty looking wounds. Not losing yourself into the act is the only way to really prevent the possibility of something dangerous happening. There is also not a specified point at which a would becomes physically dangerous (unless arteries or large veins are involved). Hypothetically, you could die from a tiny pinprick if the wrong type of bacteria just happened to enter the tiny opening in the skin. Of course, in the case of a small mark, this is unlikely but in the hypothetical range of possibility.
