My husband and I got Goliath into the vet today. It is such a relief. The prognosis is not good. He has a degenerative nerve thing going on and it will only get worse. The relief is that now I know what is happening, I know what to do to take care of him and I was able to talk to the vet about how one knows when it is the right time to say goodbye. Golly G is still a happy dog. He has incontinance sometimes but that is what carpet shampoo is for. He still likes to help me in the garden and bite at the neighbor dog through the fence. The Vet said she felt he is not in pain, at least very minimal amout anyway. She gave some options but she said that cortizone in big dogs has a tendency to change their demenor...their charector and not for the good. After discussing it we all agreed that it wouldn't give enough of a benefit to mess with his happy nature. She gave me some Rimadyl, which she discribed as ibuprophen like which will help with any arthritis discomfort and reduce any inflamation but she said she didn't think it would change much as far as his condition. She gave me a card of a reiki practitioner who works on animals. We talked about the progression of the disease so I know what to expect. And finally Golly licked her face and showed that he really liked her which made me feel good about her and what she was saying. He as some more time with us which makes me happy.
Also I called my parents yesterday. Luckily my dad answered and we had a good conversation. He sounds great! My mom was going on about how bad he is doing but I think it was her laying off her own illness on him. She is not doing well with the death of her step father. Anyway, I told him that I wasn't going to be coming over to visit. That I had a really rough few days this week and that it wouldn't be good for me to come over right now. He was perfectly cool with it, and totally supportive. He didn't cry or question me or anything which is what my mom would have done. I am so glad she was out huckleberry picking. A co-worker up and quit this week without notice. I offered to work the shifts she left uncovered. I am not getting them. My T is taking them, lol. Catherine used to work for the shop that I work at to make a little extra money will she was finishing her degree and building up her practice. After she stopped working there she continued to do employee relations work for the shop. In fact, my first job interview was with her. She doesn't do that anymore but when the employee was threatening to quit another employee called Catherine and had her talk to her first. So Tracy, my manager is also friends with Catherine and had a long talk with her and probably told her that I was going to take the shifts. I wonder if she took the shifts because she wanted to make sure I stayed out of the situation and had time off. She was very insistant that I must stay disconnected from this situation. Anyway, it is hot then heck here. My hubby is out of town with my daughter. My son and I have two days together time. So I am feeling pretty good. Carrie,
I am glad that some of these things are working out, and you are dealing with them effectively. Good job! Sorry about your dog getting old. Enjoy the time he has left. If it leads you into the quagmire, you'll probably find your way out of it again; but if you don't follow it, you'll be plagued for the rest of your life by the thought that perhaps it was your star."
