I've been a cutter for 14 years now and recently I got really angry with my T. Well, I was sitting there in group therapy wanting to cut so badly and I remembered what a nurse at the psych hospital suggested. She told me to try marking my arms up with a red marker...instead of cutting. Well, I didn't have a red marker, just a black pen. I started marking up my arms with the pen...and the cutting urge went away and I felt that pride that I know all too well that results from the cutting. I was shocked and amazed that it worked! Of course, people were asking me what I was doing. They wouldn't understand, but it helped me out a lot.

Sounds trite, but this can really work.

Ages ago I was in my boyfriends bedsit. I was drawing in a chair, he had fallen asleep on the bed. Suddenly I was overcome by the most tremendous rage against myself. Normally I'd have banged my head or gone looking for something sharp , but it was too overwhelming to do anything but attack my face with the crayon. that was in my hand. It soon rid me of what I was feeling - crayons being so waxy I became more preoccupies with making a crayon mark than hurting myself.

Huh, very interesting. I will have to try and remember to do this next time the urge hits.

I did the same thing one night, actually! And it worked for me, too! I avoided cutting as well.

I would caution about it for one reason, though. When I did this, I had wanted to SI out of anger at myself, so it became a pretty dangerous technique, too. I don't want to get overly graphic, but this can get out of hand. Then again, I did NOT go deep enough to bleed when I used the pen instead of the razor.

I also wonder about the risk of infection, if it gets out of hand.

But yes, it is an effective way of avoiding cutting, I think!

I am so long-winded.... lol!!
