How about this..
55 and a senior? Age discrimination for getting another job. To old to work, to young to get assistance. Imagine that! Anyone else having this problem? I have a double masters, speak four languages, traveled the world, raised a family and wow. I move back to the states and cannot for the life of me get an interview. When I research they say, don't act old, keep up on new technology etc...they think that we do not know anything anymore. I don't get it. I am vamping here. Talk about getting low self-esteem, depressed, feeling hopeless, and draining your savings then the IRA? People even said that I could get a job at a super market. really? Is that sustainable? Do they really think that I do not deserve or desire a career at 55 when I am forced to work until 67.5? How do we push through this? just wondering |

I ran into the this problem back August when I was let go of my last job. I kept trying for a while but no one wanted to hire me, so I filed for disability and decided to stay home. It's still not really enough to live on but it helps.

Bad news stop trying. Good news start applying for disability and go on the system NOW. Forget looking age discrimination is alive and well.

Taking a job, at least temporarily, that isn't 'sustainable' might help the depression because you would be busy.

the stress of working at a job you hate will surely eat you alive,,, esp. for 12 more years... don't do it,,
maybe move sideways in your career.. as was suggested, teaching languages might be an option, if you have the teaching credentials. what about private assistant to some rich person? i dunno,,, i have only worked intermittently in the past 20 yrs, since i got brain damage. but i have had a lot of different kinds of jobs,,, the skills are all there,, it's the need to have them in the old format that might be getting in your way~ best wishes~ Gus

Could ExperienceWorks help you get a placement with a non profit and maybe a job? It's just part time minimum wage during the placemement and there's a time limit on how long you can stay but at least it would be something. It's income based to qualify. Not sure if the IRA or other assets would be considered.

decisiontime, I agree will all of the posters here. I would file for disability as well. In the meantime keep looking for a job. It may take a while to get disability. If you are in immediate need of help, your local public aid office can help you with basic stuff like food and other various vouchers to include help with utilities, etc. I agree that our system is in need of repair. I really hope that you find your answers as I really feel for you.

Yep, I know what you mean. I lost my job (part-time) just yesterday due to 'cut backs'. Didn't even see it coming. Really needed that money too just to survive. I'm 60yo and not in very good health. So, what does one do at this point? It can be a bit discouraging.
