Scarily I can remember when phones where black and had colors instead of 7 digit numbers. I think our phone was green 34, you needed operators. Then there was party lines. It seemed like such an advance to have more than one line into a house and oh my, princess phones, choices of color!! Now you need a key fob that will ring the phone so you can find it, before it was always in the same place.

I remember wooden phones that cranked. so many long cranks and so many short cranks depending on who you were calling.

I wonder if that's where the term crank caller comes from.

I don't remember the cranks but one of those weird older relatives had an old wooden phone that had the bell like speaker part that you held up to your ear and the taking part was on the main body of the phone. I was very young and I wanted to play with it....they wouldn't let me. Pouts

My grandparents had a wooden wall phone; it had a big battery inside of it. You had to call Central to have the operator there route your call to the desired person. This was in a small town of some 600 people.

i remember having to count the number of long and short rings, on a party line, to know if it was for us. i also remember listening in on other people's calls.... entertainment was in short supply

Plus all the moms in the neighborhood could talk to each other. Better than CCTV their eyes and ears were everywhere. nobody could get away with anything...mrs so and so saw you taking apples down by the field.
