It truly does seem true that bloodletting (blood donation) has some benefits. Of course, in the past it was barbaric to just open up someone's body in a non controlled way but I think the medical system should consider it now.

With regard to the high blood sugar.... honestly -- you must reduce carbs and sugar. Also do some fasting. I did Alternate day fasting (but that is a bit hard) and my blood sugar level got down to an A1C of 5.0%. I eat veggies but not high starch ones. I would look into time restricted eating.

High blood sugar is a culprit with regard to damage to the vascular system. Among other things there is this hair like structure in your arteries called endothelial glycocalyx. This keeps things away from the sides of the arteries. Studies have shown that when you have high sugar in the blood this hair like structure flattens. Thus damage to your artery walls is more likely at that time.

Did you know that blood viscosity has been more tied to heart damage than cholesterol? There is an easy way to reduce blood viscosity. Donate blood regularly. And yes there are studies that show reduction in heart disease with those who regularly donate.

High blood sugar also makes your blood more thick if viscous. The American diabetes Assocation recommends everyone with diabetes take an aspirin for this reason (but I think aspirin can be dangerous).

Our bodies produce cholesterol, so evidently we need some. I pitched a fit about statins, but finally reconciled myself to one. What's the care for it now recommended? Thanks!

Menopausal weight gain: How to Shed Those Extra Pounds

I need to lose weight. My metabolism rate is puny. But I honestly believe my blubber keeps me from getting hurt (other than bruises) when I fall. I once fell backward on my concrete driveway, and my first body part to land was my big rear!

There is also the advantage of carrying that extra weight in that it conditions your musculoskeletal system and helps prevent osteoporosis. I had my first DEXA scan earlier this month and my bone mineral density Z score is 3.4 which places me above the 99th percentile for sex and age. I will even have a conversation with my internist to whom I sent the results in September to make sure there is no underlying condition causing such a high skeletal mass (6 lbs). But since I feel just fine, I do not think there is an underlying condition. I think it is just that I consume a ton of dairy products rich in calcium, get sunlight, supplement with Vit D3, have some experience with weight training, but mostly am simply carrying my body on these bones, training them.

Emaciated women, by contrast, are at a high risk of porous bones.

Building muscle is meant to cushion bones, so I do all the right things as far as walking/jogging/running and use weight machines. I take the stairs when I can, as it's a workout and I'm claustrophobic so I avoid elevators anyway (except when carrying groceries or laundry. Alas, our elevator has been out months so I'm hauling up the stairs)

I do supplements too and get sunlight, but not enough to worry about skin cancer I hope, as they have been telling us for decades to avoid the sun.

My bones have been stable since my last test 5 years ago. Low bone density, not osteoporosis. I like dairy so I do eat yogurt, cottage cheese, and milk. I get the calcium enriched milk, but they discontinued the fat free kind. So I get the 2% one now.

I'm doing what I can. Sometimes genetics play a role. Right now I'm trying to curb my cravings for chocolate and sweets. I read cinnamon can curb it, so I'm using that now for seasoning or flavor on some things.

I have this problem too. It was already a problem when 2020 hit, and I gained 20 lbs. during that year, sitting at home alone and isolated. I'd sit in front of the TV and eat, since nothing was open and nothing to do. And of course I ate comfort food, as I needed the comfort. I'd sit and read too, which doesn't burn any calories.

Finally I've lost some inches, as I can fit into certain clothes again. But still a little snug.

I miss the days when I could eat what I want and not gain an ounce. I ate like a lumberjack in my youth and never had a weight problem. And I guess no trouble with cholesterol and sugar, as they didn't even mention these components when I got my physical. Aging is a *****. Do men have trouble with their weight after a "certain age" or is it just us women?

Women before menopause are favored by estrogen to store fat in the buttocks, thighs, hips, where it is harmless, unlike in the gut region. Then estrogen drops and women risk looking more like overweight men, with weight concentrated around the waist, where it is dangerous.

Your chocolate cravings, though. Dark chocolate is good for you. Or do you crave milk chocolate?

Yeah I know dark chocolate is good for us, but in moderation.....

And I admit it hasn't been in moderation, so working on that. I have a sweet tooth period, and chocolate is my biggest weakness. I'm NOT giving it up nor any other foods for that matter. I need something to enjoy.

It's just so repetitive. I see the same crap posted on the bulletin boards at the stupid senior center. It's getting preachy and I'm less likely to listen the more they tell me what I'm supposed to eat. I'm throwing out the stuff I have on healthy eating because it's all the same.

Lol......at 70 I am healthy & in good shape. A few extra lbs in case I do get sick but I am still doing stuff on my farm I did when I moved here 16 years ago. Probably eating much better because I eat what the farms around me produce & really don't get much from the grocery store any more & that is mostly organic.

My favorite saying is "if it is not broke don't fix it". The one time this year I needed an MD, I had a bad reaction to the antibiotics & stopped them & refused to go back. I found a Naturalist Dr in the city & what I got from her cured my bronchitis & strep in 2 weeks without any bad side effects.

I have a new Aussie Shepherd puppy & he definitely keeps me in shape....no gym necessary

Same here. My blubber I think has saved me a few times.

This has always been my only major problem. I am about 50 lbs overweight. And that seems to be where I need to lose it. I just want to lose about 25 lbs of it and keep it off but it is so difficult with a slow metabolism. No one understands.

On the other hand though there is evidence that a slow metabolism slows aging / is good for you. There is a society called calorie restriction - where the people eat about 60% of the recommended amount for that purpose. They theory is that it slows everything down - including cell division.

I think menopause is a way to help us live longer and we just misunderstand it.
