I've been masturbating from the age of 16 and im 20 now but it seems to be getting a little out of hand. I find myself masturbating anywhere from 5 to 10 times per day at the moment. i don't know whether this is normal or not or whether it is a side effect of being sexually abused in the past and not being able to let men or women near me sexually. Is it normal?

It is only an issue if it occupies a significant part of your time.If the rest is balanced it shouldn't matter and is no doubt because you are in a prime age range hormonally. Is it impeding on all areas of your life? In other words do you pursue friends, recreation, self care, other endeavors?I disagree with the previous poster,as you've not submitted enough info for anyone to assume that you are unhealthily indulging sexually pleasuring yourself.Things are an issue when they rob you of other aspects of necessary balance, activities, endeavors.Or when something seems to be ones only pursuit,and/or they feel compelled to do it and don't want to.
Thanks for this!

Your masturbating frequency should decline as you age if it's just from testosterone alone. But a licensed therapist can help sort out issues with not being able to let others near you sexually or if there are other reasons as to why you are masturbating so frequently. Are you in college? If so, they have campus councilors that can help you. It's all confidential.

There is also Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous. They are a great group of people. Many of whom are trying to give up compulsive masturbation. But the decision for you to get help must be yours alone. Only you know how unhealthy the activity is for you. Some people think masturbation alone is too much others do it many times a day and think it's no problem. Look up the group, it's free to those who need it. but generally ask a donation of one or two dollars.

Hypersexuality can also be a component of mania in bipolar. A qualified therapist can help identify if this is an issue.

Frequent masturbation, for males at least, is fairly normal for your age.

Can be normal but can also be an attempt to fulfill through fantasy what you don't get in real life. Don't go that route. Address your problems head on and build a real relationship. Fantasy won't sustain you long run.
