lol Well, I confess, it's not my area of expertise, but it sounds to me just like very light BDSM play, which is much more widespread than you'd think. Indeed, even outside of BDSM play, spanking is quite within the realm of "normal," I think. You needn't worry about it...lol you only need to get the all clear from your partner. Communication is key.

No need to be sorry at all, nor embarrassed to speak your mind here. I think you'll find us all quite accepting.

I would say just be open and honest about what you want. I would test the waters so to speak. I never thought about bdsm until my wife (then gf) wanted me to try it. It was exciting and different.
