So this is how it goes...

I am tired all the time.
At night I can't get to sleep til like, 3am or later.
I am able to sleep a full 12 hours sometimes.
When I fall asleep, I either can only sleep for like, at most 2 hours, or for 8-12 hours; so really its little sleep, or alot of sleep.

Is this..well, not normal, but healthy??

It does not sound normal or healthy. I would go to your regular doctor and have him do some tests, see if you have a deficiency of some sort (thyroid, vitamin D, etc.) and also start keeping a more regular sleep schedule, going to bed at 10:00-12:00 or so every night, for example, and getting up at 6:00-8:00, no matter how you feel. Our internal clock is on a 24 hour schedule and sleep is factored in there and if you mess with your wake cycle, you are also messing with your sleep cycle, and vice versa.

I have sleep apnea and use a machine every night. have you thought about a sleep study? My issue is I can't seem to stay asleep, I hear doorbells or the phone ringing, and none of the sleep meds work for me. I had 3 sleep studies and will be on the apnea machine forever but it doesn't help explain why my sleep habits are the way they are.
