Last night I dreamed I woke up around 4 am and took my dog out. As I was coming back in I noticed the door was open. I got worried because I knew I shut it. I went to the other door and it was open too. I don't know why but I was so afraid in my dream at that point. I thought someone was in the house. I then called my friend (who is my first love and potential love again) to come over. He came over and entered the house and I stayed outside with my dog. Somehow I was in my car with my dog looking into the house and I could see through the window that there was a man with a knife and my boyfriend was struggling with him. I then remember reading something in the paper of my boyfriend's murder and I became unconsolable. I remember feeling suicidal and I could feel this deep pain in my dream. The last thing I remember before I woke up was there was some confusion whether my boyfriend had actually died or not and might be still alive. What do you think?

You have an "Open Door Policy" when it comes to letting others enter your house. "House" meaning yourself.

You are seeing into your self, and your struggles. You are struggling whether or not to have a closer relationship with your friend. I say go with your deeper feelings you have toward him.

I think you are "open" to the ex-boyfriend coming back but have mixed feelings; he might knife you in the heart again, "kill" you (or you, him, if you broke up with him)? You sound unsure about the relationship with him being "dead", even though he's your ex-.

Just my 2 cents,
Everything in your dream is a representative/characteristic of self/or feeling.
Your house is your heart, closing the door and walking your dog is you being independent of your ex and your dog is your buddy, a trustful companion who
gives unconditional love.
Calling upon your ex brought confusion, fear, anxiety, and in the end you were'nt
sure what was real. Except the pain, that you felt in your soul.
Right now your emotions are raw and you need to be able trust yourself again.
Take some time to grieve the loss of the relationship and remember what caused the breakup and heal. Do things that reinforce who you are. Impower yourself by being self sufficient.
